Providing Context for Phonics to Make Sense

One of the most difficult aspects about being a good speller is that English has so many ways to spell sounds in words!

Did you know that there are at least 11 ways to spell the Long I sound? Think of these words that all have a Long I sound: eye, height, pirate, diamond, pie, light, kite, buy, sky, type and sign. No wonder it’s confusing!

Now think of these words:

  • read, live and close. Their pronunciation depends entirely on context.
  • or if you are asked to spell red. Is it red…or read? Again, without context it will be hit and miss as to which spelling to choose.
  • and what about words such as so/sew/sow
  • or road/rowed/rode!

Context is essential, which is where whole language plays such a critical role. Whole language by itself however, without explicit phonics teaching, runs the risk that understanding of spelling strategies can be missed or patchy. 

Phonics by itself, apart from lacking the essential context for understanding can be very flat.. 

Not only is learning to spell the English language so confusing, but more often than not, it’s dry and boring. It’s no wonder that children can become disheartened.
