Phonics Activities
Phonics is the process of learning how letters and groups of letters represent the sounds in spoken words.
In languages such as Finnish and Italian, learning phonics is relatively straightforward because there is a close one-to-one relationship between sounds and letters—most sounds are represented by a single spelling, and words are usually pronounced exactly as they are written.
English, however, is much more complex. The 44 sounds of English can be represented by hundreds of different spelling patterns, and many letters can represent more than one sound. For example, the long a sound can be spelled a_e, ai, ay, ea, eigh, and several other ways. This complexity makes learning to read and spell English far more challenging and highlights the importance of systematic phonics instruction.
These story based phonics activities can be used in conjunction with our phonics stories, as a complement to any favourite methodology or as a stand alone activity.
